GERARD ROCKS

Gerard has been HRR’s Jack of All Trades (and master of none!) since joining
the organisation 28 years ago. He currently presents the Monday evening comedy show
“I Suppose You Think That’s Funny” as well as Saturday lunchtime Record requests
and the occasional “Take Five” interview programme but in the past has “covered”
every type of show from Big Band and Classical music programmes to Saturday Sport
(“when they’ve been desperate”). He started in Hospital Radio while at university
in Oxford, where he interviewed Cliff Richard, The Goodies, Hinge & Brackett
and Phil Archer from Radio 4’s “The Archers”(to name but a few) and joined HRR
after taking up his day job in Reading as a French teacher in 1981.
After a number of years as Secretary of the organisation Gerard is
HRR’s current Chairman.

Musical memories : “This’ll really date me. I can remember listening to the
Light Programme - Uncle Mac’s Children’s Favourites on a Saturday morning and
Housewives’ choice (with my mum – honest !!) on weekdays. They were always
playing the end of the 1812 Overture and all those bells and canons used to
really scare me! The first records I actually bought? That would be either
A Walk in the Black Forest by Horst Jankowski or one of those 33rpm EPs
with the soundtrack of an episode of Thunderbirds on it (Yes, I was into
cult television before it was cult!)”

Broadcasting heroes ? “ If you ever listen to my shows – and Heaven knows,
you deserve a medal if you have! I try to sound like a combination of
Chris Tarrant and the (much missed) Ray Moore, formerly of Radio 2. That said,
I’ve also been told I sound like Alan Titchmarsh but was never sure if that was
meant to be a compliment or not!”

Not Many People Know That ……. Gerard once managed to leave Anne Robinson speechless
by serenading her on The Weakest Link. As well as being addicted to Coronation Street
and Australian soaps he is also a Doctor Who fan and rather proud, though he says so
himself, of his impression of a Dalek!
